Senate strips ANWR provision from new budget

THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 2003

The Senate voted 52-48 on Wednesday to reject drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

The vote stripped a pro-development provision from the fiscal year 2004 budget resolution. Republicans only needed a simple majority but failed to obtain the necessary votes.

Eight Republicans joined with almost every Democrat to oppose drilling. Included was John McCain of Arizona, former chairman of the Senate Indian Affairs Committee.

Republican Ben Nighthorse Campbell, of Colorado, and Democrat Daniel Inouye, of Hawaii, supported drilling as did Democrat Daniel Akaka of Hawaii. All sit on the Indian affairs and Energy and Natural Resources Committee.
