Cherokee's Smith cleared for re-election

FRIDAY, MARCH 21, 2003 The Cherokee Nation Judicial Appeals Tribunal on Thursday said chief Chad Smith can run for re-election. A political opponent sought to disqualify Smith because he maintains a home outside of Cherokee Nation boundaries. But the court, in a 3-0 decision, said Smith spent between "56 percent to 73 percent" of his time at a separate home he rents within tribal territory. Get the Story:
