TUESDAY, MARCH 25, 2003

Navajo Nation President Joe Shirley Jr. wants the Peabody mines in northeastern Arizona to keep operating, The Arizona Republic reports.

The paper reported comments made by Shirley at at summit for water and educational issues in Arizona. He called the mines the "lifeline" of the Navajo and Hopi tribes and expressed support for a proposed pipeline that would provide an alternative water source for Peabody's operation.

Currently, Peabody draws water from a water source critical to both tribes. Peabody is in talks with the tribes and a power generating company to discuss alternatives.
