N.C. school doesn't want to eliminate mascot

FRIDAY, MARCH 28, 2003 Officials at the South Stokes High School in North Carolina don't want to eliminate their "Mighty Sauras" Indian mascot. The mascot, sometimes with tomahawk, is named for the historic Saura Tribe, whose members are believed to have joined with Cherokee Tribe. "To me, if I was a member of the Saura Indian tribe, I would feel very honored," athletic director Tim Lawson told The Winston Salem Journal. "We put it on a pedestal."
