With just three or four fluent speakers remaining, the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe of Washington is trying to revitalize the Klallam language.

The tribe has hired a linguist who is working with tribal elders to document the language. The effort has produced video games, dictionaries, reference guides, lessons on CD-ROM and language classes at a local high school.

The tribe is one of many that are trying to combat language loss. According to language experts, there are 175 Native languages still spoken today but only about 20 are being passed onto a younger generation.
