"With a beaded strip running through the center, the man's robe blanket -- half blue, half red -- graces the gallery wall, the colors representing the sacredness of night and day among the Lakota.

The robe, created by Arthur Amiotte, brings the artist's vision of the Lakota experience to world view. It is one of 68 pieces in which Amiotte explores his creative nature through the use of beads, yarn, photographs, catalog advertisements, paint and fabric.

Amiotte's work -- a top-of-the-line collection spanning more than three decades -- is on display now through May 9 as part of the "Arthur Amiotte Retrospective Exhibition: Continuity and Diversity" at the Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge Reservation.

The stunning exhibit at the school caught me by surprise."
