Paige: Christian values belong in public schools

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 9, 2003 In an interview with a Baptist publication, Secretary of Education Rod Paige said Christian values belong in public schools. The remarks have prompted calls for him to resign. "All things equal, I would prefer to have a child in a school that has a strong appreciation for the values of the Christian community, where a child is taught to have a strong faith," Paige said in the Baptist Press News. "Where a child is taught that, there is a source of strength greater than themselves." Civil liberties and teacher groups said the comments were inappropriate.
