FRIDAY, APRIL 11, 2003

Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq, was honored at the recent Northern Arizona University pow-wow.

Members of the Piestewa family attended the March 5 event, held one day after the military confirmed Piestewa died in combat. Piestewa's brother, Wayland, spoke to the crowd.

"If you listen very carefully, each and every one of us have to become warriors," he said, The Navajo Times reported. "We have been called to be warriors, it is your calling to be warriors. Become warriors of your tribes, nations as we have learned from our sister."

Also, members of the Reno-Sparks Indian Colony held in support of Piestewa yesterday. One of Piestewa's first cousins lives on the Reno-Sparks reservation.
