Navajo lawmakers cite poor timing for name change

Two Arizona state lawmakers who represent the Hopi and Navajo tribes say a push to rename Squaw Peak in honor of Lori Piestewa, the Hopi woman killed in action in Iraq, should wait.

Rep. Jack Jackson Jr. and his father, state Sen. Jack Jackson Sr. say the Legislature should not act in order to give Piestewa's family time to grieve. The Jacksons are members of the Navajo Nation.

Jackson Jr. has introduced a bill to eliminate all "squaw" place names in the state. He believes renaming Squaw Peak is a worthy idea but won't solve the greater issue.
