GOP Senator who fought land claims to retire

WEDNESDAY, APRIL 16, 2003

Senator Peter Fitzgerald, a Republican from Illinois who fought tribal land claims in his state, announced on Tuesday that he will not seek re-election.

Fitzgerald and other members of Illinois' Congressional delegation supported legislation that would have terminated all treaty rights in Illinois. The Miami Nation of Oklahoma, the Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma and the Prairie Band Potawatomi Nation of Kansas opposed the bills.

Fitzgerald is a first-term senator.
