"They did the right thing. They righted a wrong. It was time.

For the third time in five years, members of the state Board on Geographic and Historic Names were asked to change the name of Squaw Peak, a Phoenix landmark.

In 1998, the board rejected the name "Iron Mountain." A year later, it turned down "Phoenix Mountain." Members wanted something more appropriate to the state's Native American heritage.

And over the past two weeks, through sacrifice, tragedy and a raging controversy, the right name surfaced."
