"The battle over whether to rename Squaw Peak turned into an ugly, drawn-out, political game. That's a shame because, in service to her country, Lori Piestewa made the ultimate sacrifice, and her name deserved so much more.

Money, that is.

It started with people discussing whether "squaw" is a synonym for a woman's private parts, but devolved to folks questioning whether Piestewa deserved to be called a hero.

At least this way, all that heated rhetoric could have become cold cash.

And instead of honoring Piestewa's memory with a symbolic gesture, it would have helped people who walk in her shoes - not as an Army private, but as a single mother of two living in rural Arizona."
