The police department on the Fort Peck Reservation in Montana is being hailed as a model for Indian Country.

The department works cooperatively with other jurisdictions to avoid some of the problems that are unique to reservations. With cross-deputization, manpower has grown from four to 66.

Before the Fort Peck tribes instituted the changes, crimes were at dangerous levels. Although still high, the rate has dropped below the state average. Methamphetamine and alcohol-related crimes continue to be a problem.
