Tlingit weaver gets glimpse into NMAI collection

MONDAY, APRIL 21, 2003 The new National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C., isn't slated to open until next year but the Smithsonian has opened the doors to its massive collection to visiting artists. As a NMAI visiting scholar, Teri Rofkar, a Tlingit weaver from Alaska, was able to look through works of her ancestors. Although items lack documentation, she recognized many of them. The NMAI's entire collection won't go on display. Some will be stored at a facility outside DC. Get the Story:
