Where are the promised Catskills casinos?

In the wake of the September 11 terrorist attacks and projected budget shortfalls, New York Governor George Pataki (R) and other New York politicians promised three new tribal casinos in the Catskills.

Eighteen months later, people are still asking: Where are the casinos?

The Middletown Times Herald-Record says two tribes -- the St. Regis Mohawk of New York and the Stockbridge-Munsee Mohicans of Wisconsin -- are waiting for federal approval of their off-reservation casino proposals. A third, the Cayuga Nation of New York, has just entered the race.

But the state still hasn't negotiated compacts with the St. Regis Mohawk Tribe, the furthest along in the process. "The governor wants to move as expeditiously as possible," a Pataki spokesperson told the paper.
