THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2003

The Florida Senate on Wednesday voted 32-6 on a bill that rescinds state jurisdiction over Miccosukee tribal lands.

The bill goes to the House, where a different version is under consideration. The House bill reserves state jurisdiction over crimes committed by non-Indians.

State jurisdiction is a remnant of the termination era. Most states do not exercise authority over reservations.
