Obituary: Waterman champion of Oneida land claim

THURSDAY, APRIL 24, 2003 Delia Waterman, a crusader for Oneida Nation land rights, died on Saturday. She was 102. Waterman was born and raised on the Onondaga Reservation and later moved to Oneida ancestral territory. She was fluent in four Iroquois languages and was named Iroquois Woman of the Year in 1967. Waterman started the fight to reclaim 250,000 acres of ancestral land more than 50 years ago. The case is still in litigation. Get the Story:
