MONDAY, APRIL 28, 2003

The Bureau of Indian Affairs has hired a hydrologist to investigate a proposed coal mine near a lake sacred to the Zuni Tribe of New Mexico.

The tribe says the mine will drain water from Zuni Lake. Dr. Phil King, an engineering professor at New Mexico State University who prepared another report that backed up the tribe's case, will look into the claims.

King's earlier report didn't prevent the Department of Interior from approving the mine. The Interior only restricted the water sources that Salt River Project could use.
