Navajo Nation jail facility closed for violations

THURSDAY, MAY 1, 2003 The Indian Health Service shut down a detention center on the Navajo Reservation due to health violations, The Farmington Daily Times reports. The Shiprock Detention Center has been closed since March 20, leaving the tribe with only 72 beds to house detainees. The more serious offenders are sent to Arizona while others are set free.
