Faction accuses 'imposters' of promoting casino

FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2003 Factions of the Ione Band of Miwok Indians of California are battling over a proposed casino. One faction, led by Matt Franklin, wants the casino. But the other, led by Nicholas Villa, opposes it and says Franklin and his associates are members of a terminated tribe. The Bureau of Indian Affairs appears to recognize the Franklin faction, according to a 1998 letter cited by The Amador Ledger Dispatch. Get the Story:
