S.C. recognition bill includes gambling ban

FRIDAY, MAY 2, 2003 A bill under consideration in the South Carolina Senate would authorize the state to recognize tribes. But unlike the House version, it includes a provision that prohibits state-recognized tribes from gaming. Gilbert Blue, the chief of the Catawba Nation, says he can't support the bill because it could affect the tribe's rights. The Catawba Nation is the only federally-recognized tribe in the state. The tribe currently operates a Class II bingo hall. Get the Story:
