Wis. court dismisses casino compact challenge

The Wisconsin Supreme Court on Tuesday dismissed a challenge to new tribal casino compacts, leaving the dispute to the federal courts.

Republican lawmakers say the compacts violate a constitutional ban on the expansion of gaming. The agreements allow the tribes to offer new Class III games.

Gov. Jim Doyle (D), who negotiated the compacts, wanted the case heard in federal court. He expects the state to take in an additional $210 million in revenue. This is less than the amount he earlier promised but now says he can make up the gap with other budget proposals.
