GOP leader keeps Indian artifacts in office

FRIDAY, MAY 9, 2003 Roy Blunt (R-Mo), the House Majority Whip, has Indian artifacts from the Smithsonian on display in his office, the Associated Press reports. Blunt has a tomahawk, war club, flesh scraper and a peace pipe. As the House majority whip, he has access to Smithsonian items, a privilege afforded to few. Blunt also has some of George Catlin's famous paintings of Indians on display. "He admired the Indian culture and really, in many ways, caught it at its apex in the 1830s, particularly the culture of the Plains Indians," Blunt said of Catlin. Get the Story:
