Eastern Cherokee Tribe to hold primary election

The Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians of North Carolina will hold a primary election June 4.

Seven candidates, including incumbent Leon Jones, are running for principal chief. The vice-chief and all 12 tribal council seats are also up for grabs.

The tribe has 13,000 members. It is the only federally-recognized tribe in the state.
