TUESDAY, MAY 20, 2003

A bill to expand the storage of waste at a nuclear plan near the Prairie Island Indian Community was blocked by Democrats in the Minnesota Senate on Monday.

The legislation had already been approved earlier the Senate and more recently by the House but some Democrats opposed to it used a technique to delay a vote. It has to be reintroduced during a special session if lawmakers want it passed.

As part of the deal, the tribe will be paid as long as the facility stays open. The tribe could receive upwards of $50 million.
