Congress needs to pass a bill designed to protect Native languages, The Great Falls Tribune says in an editorial.

The paper cites declining rates of speakers of Montana's tribal languages. "So why should the federal government help?" the paper asks. "Because it was federal policy that put many of these languages on the endangered list."

The bill, sponsored by Sen. Daniel Inouye (D-Hawaii), authorizes survival schools to provide immersion in Native languages and also creates other language programs.
