THURSDAY, MAY 29, 2003

The Morongo Band of Mission Indians broke ground on a $250 million casino-resort destined to be the second-largest tribal gaming facility in California.

The facility will feature a 23-story hotel and 148,000 square feet of casino space. The casino has enough room for 3,000 slot machines, which is 1,000 more than the state's cap.

The tribe could renegotiate its casino compact to operate more machines. Gov. Gray Davis (D), who attended yesterday's groundbreaking, wants to open talks with tribes in order to patch up holes in the state budget.
