High school student's article upsets Ore. tribe

MONDAY, JUNE 2, 2003 A high school student's newspaper article has upset the Cow Creek Umpqua Tribe of Oregon. James Osborn, 18, the assistant editor of The Orange R, said he was trying to make a statement about negative stereotypes. But statements referring to the school's Indian mascot as "Tonto" and claims that tribal members used drugs and scalped people drew complaints from a tribal leader. Roseburg High School is getting ready to modify its mascot to be more culturally sensitive. Get the Story:
