FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 2003 The California Assembly, for the second year in a row, defeated a bill to ban the use of Indian mascots without consultation and approval with tribal governments. The bill failed 37 to 31. Critics said Indian mascot names honor Indian people and said it gives school teams a sense of toughness and pride. "Nobody wants to run on the field saying we're the Sacramento Marshmallows or we're the Sacramento Slugs," said Rick Keene, a Republican who said he is part Cherokee, as reported by the Associated Press.
