A National Park Service spokesperson defended the agency's plans to send 16 officials to South Africa for an upcoming conference.

The leaders of the House Interior Appropriations subcommittee aren't happy though. Reps. Charles Taylor (R-N.C.) and Norm Dicks (D-Wash.) wrote Secretary of Interior Gale Norton and said the trip demonstrates a "lack of judgment," The Arizona Republic reported.

In a recent report, the General Accounting Office (GAO) said NPS spent somewhere between $39 million to $50 million in the past four fiscal years on travel but the agency was unable to detail some of the expenditures.
