The National Park Service has been ordered to cut its repair budget by 28 percent in order to pay for consultants who are studying privatization of jobs, The Washington Post reports.

President Bush promised to spend $5 billion, over five years, to reduce the backlog of repairs and constructions at the nation's parks. But according to the National Parks Conservation Association, the administration has only spent $2.3 billion in three years.

According to a Department of Interior official, about 7 percent of NPS jobs are being considered for privatization. Up to 20 percent have been identified as candidates for outsourcing.
