Mankiller urges students to shape perceptions

THURSDAY, JUNE 12, 2003 Wilma Mankiller, former principal chief of the Cherokee Nation of Oklahoma, spoke to students at the University of South Dakota's American Indian Journalism Institute on Wednesday. Mankiller said Native journalists have the power to shape public perception of Native Americans. She called on students to focus on positive changes in Indian Country but also problems faced. Mankiller was the first woman elected to lead the Cherokee Nation, the second largest tribe in the U.S. The American Indian Journalism Institute is a summer program for Native students.
