Two Senate Democrats have written letters to President Bush, urging him to work with both political parties on nominations to the Supreme Court.

Although no justice has announced his or her retirement, interest groups are expecting a vacancy. The names most often cited are Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist and Justices John Paul Stevens and Sandra Day O'Connor.

Sens. Patrick J. Leahy (D-Vt.) and Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.) say Bush should work in a bipartisan fashion in order to avoid a pick that could divide Americans and the Senate, which has deadlocked on lower court nominees.
