Daschle seeks consensus on Supreme Court

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 18, 2003 Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle (D-South Dakota) is the latest Democrat to write President Bush about a potential Supreme Court vacancy. Daschle and other Democrats want Bush to consult with their party and Republicans about a nomination to the court. The Democrats say they want to avoid a showdown over a nominee. Court observer say it is possible that Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist, Justice John Paul Stevens or Justice Sandra Day O'Connor might announce his or her retirement this month. The court has 10 decisions remaining this term on high-profile topics including affirmative action, gay rights and commercial speech. Get the Story:
