Editorial: Indian memorial at Bighorn long overdue

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 25, 2003

The Indian warriors who fought at the June 25, 1876, Battle of Little Bighorn were simply defending their families and way of life, The Rapid City Journal says in an editorial.

The paper says a memorial to the warriors will finally recognize the tribal view of history. "Today's dedication of the Indian memorial at Little Bighorn battlefield, it is hoped, ends a long chapter of ignoring the perspectives of Indians in the histories of the conflicts that resulted from the settling of North America and the forcible displacement of the people who already lived here," the paper says.
