THURSDAY, JUNE 26, 2003

The Rhode Island House Finance Committee unveiled new legislation that would put a casino before state voters in 2004, restoring language that would tie the proposal to a specific operator.

The Narragansett Tribe has been seeking a casino for several years but needs voter approval. Chief sachem Matthew Thomas said the tribe could wait until 2004 to put the issue on the ballot.

There could be some competition from two men who have formed a partnership to promote a "large casino" in the state, The Providence Journal reports. The group has a deal with folks "who have built casinos in Las Vegas and for various Indian tribes" one of the men told the paper.
