Ore. tribe had warned rancher on bison herd

FRIDAY, JUNE 27, 2003 The Confederated Umatilla Tribes of Oregon had ordered a private rancher to comply with tribal environmental law for a bison herd that is now loose on the reservation. The tribe said waste from the herd was polluting the water supply. But rather than follow the law, the rancher ended up turning his animals loose and the tribe has been trying to round them up for several days. Tribal officials consulted other tribes with bison experience about how best to capture the animals. They are hoping to trap them up with an elk trap. Get the Story:
