A consortium of research institutions is eyeing a new location for a telescope project.

The Very Energetic Radiation Imaging System, or VERITAS, consortium wants to locate the telescopes at Kitt Peak National Observatory in Arizona. The site lies within Tohono O'odham Nation territory and the tribe would need to approve the project.

The consortium originally sought to locate the telescopes near a sweat lodge in a national forest but was rejected after protests by the Tohono O'odham Nation and other tribes.
