BLM adopts new name for Squaw Leap in Calif.

MONDAY, JUNE 30, 2003 The Bureau of Land Management has renamed the Squaw Leap Management Area, a recreation area in California, as the San Joaquin River Gorge. The new name won't appear on any maps until someone asks the U.S. Board of Geographic Names to approve it. The origin of the Squaw Leap name is in dispute, some saying it comes from a story about Indian women who leaped to their deaths rather than be captured by Army soldiers. Get the Story:
