WEDNESDAY, JULY 2, 2003

The chief sachem of the Narragansett Tribe of Rhode Island said he wasn't optimistic that a bill to put a casino before voters will clear the State Legislature.

The House on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed the measure, which would allow the tribe to place its proposal on the ballot. But a Senate leader said it may not pass before the end of the legislative session tonight.

Gov. Donald Carcieri has said he would veto a casino bill.
