The state of Alaska will open millions of acres of state and Alaska Native corporation lands around Bristol Bay to exploration.

Gov. Frank Murkowski (R) added the on-shore area to a five-year oil and gas leasing program at the request of the Bristol Bay Native Corporation. The state will work with the corporation to develop a memorandum of understanding on leasing and related issues.

Bristol Bay leaders said they need to replace a downturn in the fishing economy with other development.
