WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2003 Citizen Potawatomi Nation chairman John "Rocky" Barrett has fired two tribal lawyers over their handling of a politically-tinged criminal defamation case, The Daily Oklahoman reports. Barrett pressed for the charges to be brought against four council members and three tribal members after they accused him of sabotaging a political opponent's run for office. But the case, being heard in a tribal forum, was dismissed. Barrett fired former attorney general Jon Pappas for refusing to prosecute the case, said Mike Rose, who was Pappas' assistant. Then Barrett fired Rose for the same reason, he said. Rose said the Oklahoma Bar Association told Pappas that prosecuting the case could bring disciplinary action for professional misconduct.
