WEDNESDAY, JULY 9, 2003

A fire burning on Taos Pueblo land in New Mexico doubled in size to more than 3,300 acres, frustrating attempts to control the intense blaze.

The fire has not threatened lives or homes but there is fear that it will damage the watershed, sacred sites and the sacred Blue Lake. The only source of water for the main tribal village, which dates back 1,000 years, is a creek.
