Mixed blood Utes seek restoration of status

MONDAY, JULY 14, 2003 A group of Ute Indians from Utah whose status was terminated by the federal government in 1954 is seeking restoration through a lawsuit. The Mixed Blood Uintas were terminated through an act of Congress that also distributed the trust assets of the Uintah and Ouray Reservation. The lawsuit claims the Department of Interior never fulfilled the Ute Partion Act. The "full blood" Utes were targeted for termination at a later date, but that never happened. The Northern Ute Tribe remains federally recognized. Get the Story:
