Navajo women sue over arrest by Hopi Tribe
Facebook Twitter Email
TUESDAY, JULY 15, 2003

Eight Navajo Nation women who live on land under the jurisdiction of the Hopi Tribe are suing in federal court over their arrest by the tribe.

The lawsuit claims the Hopi Tribe violated their religious rights in connection with a disputed Sundance held on Hopi land. The women want a federal judge to impose an injunction on the tribe.

The women are part of a group of Navajo resisters who refuse to recognize the jurisdiction of the Hopi Tribe. Some also claim to be independent of the Navajo Nation.
