Pequot tribe's water plant one of largest

THURSDAY, JULY 17, 2003 The Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation of Connecticut operates one of the largest water treatment plants on the East Coast, The Norwich Bulletin reports. The facility averages 900,000 gallons a day, and handles 1.4 million gallons at its peak. When an expansion is complete, it will be able to treat up to 2.7 million gallons a day, with the ability to handle 4 million. The tribe's plant is regulated by the state and the Environmental Protection Agency. The tribe is in the middle of a dispute between three local towns and the state Department of Public Health, which recognizes the tribe's water authority. Local leaders are suing to reverse the department's decision. Get the Story:
