Shutdown of Meskwaki Tribe's casino benefits state

FRIDAY, JULY 18, 2003

Since the closure of the Meskwaki Tribe's casino in May, the state of Iowa has seen business grow at gaming facilities.

Revenues are up anywhere from 11 percent to 17 percent at non-Indian casinos. The state benefits because it taxes the facilities.

On the other hand, the state is losing due to a jump in unemployment. More than 1,200 people are out of jobs, contributing to a rise in unemployment rates. Prior to the closure, the rate in Tama County was only 3.3 percent.

The tribe's casino was ordered closed by the National Indian Gaming Commission due to an internal leadership dispute. The 8th Circuit Court of Appeals will hold a hearing to decide if the casino should be reopened.
