Unrecognized tribe disputes claim of lost title

FRIDAY, JULY 25, 2003 The Seaconke Wampanoag Tribe, an unrecognized group, filed a brief in federal court responding to claims that it has lost title to land in Rhode Island. The tribe says it has a 1661 title deed to 34-square-mile of land. The American Land Title Association field a brief to dispute the claim. The state is also fighting the tribe and contends that all outstanding tribal land claims were extinguished by the 1978 Rhode Island Claims Settlement Act. Get the Story:
