OCTOBER 31, 2000

Young or old, Halloween is a time of the year where everyone can have fun pretending to be someone else. And get some candy out of it.

So if your kids don't know what they are going to wear tonight or if you showed up to the office without a costume, here are some of the best Indian Country Costume Ideas. You'll amaze everyone with your creativeness and good taste.

Indian Lawyer
Supplies Needed:
  • Briefcase
  • Bolo tie if you're a man
  • Copy of Indian Law in a Nutshell (Amazon.Com US$23.50)
  • Long hair if you got it or a wig if you don't. Must be tied in a ponytail if you're a man.
  • Copy of resume
Indian Lawyer is by far the easiest costume you or your child can wear tonight. And educational as well!

Always ready to fight for sovereignty (and look for a new job), Indian Lawyer gets the candy he or she wants or files for an appeal faster than you can say Butterfinger.
Kevin Gover
Supplies Needed:
  • All of the above plus:
  • Glasses
  • Pamphlet to Hair Club For Men inside briefcase
Kevin Gover is only a slight variation on Indian Lawyer but very popular in some parts of the country. A knock on the door on many a reservation home and the occupants will give you more than just candy.

Not recommended for trick-or-treaters in southeastern Connecticut.
Fry Bread Barbie
Supplies Needed:
  • Empty bag of flour (Use it to carry your loot)
  • Phone number to Commodity Ken and Code Talker GI Joe
  • Apron
A close relative of Tlingit Barbie and Puerto Rican Barbie, Fry Bread Barbie is a costume for both the young and old in Indian Country.

In high demand on just about every reservation, Fry Bread Barbie is destined to be the most popular character this Halloween. Just be prepared to actually make some fry bread in case you are called to duty.
Kennewick Man
Supplies Needed: If you're like John Potter, this Halloween, you'll be dressed as the oldest Indian man alive today: Kennewick Man.

But the soul who chooses to be Kennewick Man this Halloween will have to fight off other trick-or-treaters who will try to take his or her candy away and study it. Being Kennewick Man is not easy, but someone's gotta do it.

Often confused with Captain Picard of Star Trek, but without the accent.
