FRIDAY, AUGUST 10, 2001

Mozart is coming to the Kalispel Reservation in Washington, where tribal members and an opera singer will be presenting "The Magic Flute" later this month.

The tribe's pow-wow grounds will be transformed into an opera house August 29. The opera, which includes a drum group, will be narrated in both Salish and English. It will be performed by tribal members and opera professionals.

Libby Kopczynski Moore, an opera singer in New York City who is originally from Spokane, got the idea to stage the opera last year. She contacted the late Peter Campbell, who directed her to the Kalispel Tribe.

Campbell was director of the Center for Plateau Cultural Studies at the Cheney Cowles Museum. He died of a heart attack last fall.
